How to make healthy chex mix
Ingredients Needed
For the seasoning mix:
- Olive oil. Helps hold the spices on the snack mix and helps it get crispy.
- Worcestershire sauce. Provides the best depth of flavor to the snack mix.
- Salt. As any salty snack mix needs!
- Paprika. You can use any kind you have on hand, including smoked.
- Onion and garlic powder. For that trademark Chex Mix flava.
For the snack mix:
- Wheat and Rice Chex. Really any kind of toasted cereal will work. Your choice!
- Multigrain Cheerios. I like to use the multigrain because they're higher in fiber, but regular Cheerios work, too.
- Even the honey nut are good to add a little sweetness if you're into that.
- Pretzels. I like twists, but use any kind you like.
- Goldfish Crackers. Or any small cheddar cracker.
- Peanuts and cashews. To add a little nuttiness (and nutrition)!
- Popcorn. This is optional.
- I grab a bag of Smart Pop and mix it in once the snack mix is cooled.
Equipment Needed
- An oven to bake the snack mix.
- Two baking sheets with cooking spray.
- Measuring cups and spoons.
- A small bowl and teaspoon to mix together the seasonings.
- A large bowl and large spoon to mix everything together.
- Airtight containers or Ziploc bags for storage.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Coat 2 baking sheets with cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, stir together the olive oil, Worcestershire, salt, paprika, onion powder and garlic powder until combined.
- In a large bowl, stir together the cereals, pretzels, Goldfish crackers, peanuts and cashews.
- Drizzle with the seasoning mix and toss to evenly coat.
- Transfer the mixture to the two prepared baking sheets and spread into one even layer.
- Bake for 1 hour or until mix is lightly browned. Let cool, then fold in the popcorn (if using).
- It's ready to eat!
