Featured Ingredients
- Ground chicken: It's inexpensive (I get it at Aldi for <$4 per pound!) and is lean.
- Seasonings: Onion powder, garlic powder, salt and black pepper. Keep it simple!
- Ketchup: The base of the sauce is sweet and sassy ketchup.
- Brown sugar: To make it sweet and give it that classic brown sugary flavor.
- Mustard: Yellow, preferably to give it some more sass.
- Hamburger buns: The vehicle to house lots of sloppy goodness.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- In a medium skillet, heat the oil to medium heat.
- Add the ground chicken and cook 6-8 minutes or until browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the salt, onion and garlic powders and black pepper.
- Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard and 3 tablespoons of water.
- Bring to a high simmer, then reduce the heat to a low simmer and let cook 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce has thickened and coats the chicken.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning, if necessary.
- Scoop the sloppy joe meat onto the bottom buns and top with pickles and the top bun.
