Ground Chicken Sloppy Joes

This recipe for ground chicken sloppy joes is super flavorful, easy to make and pleases the entire family!

These joes are made with a quick sauce of ketchup, brown sugar and mustard and seasoned with onion and garlic.

This will become your new favorite sloppy joe recipe, I promise!

  • Ground chicken: It’s inexpensive (I get it at Aldi for <$4 per pound!) and is lean.
  • Seasonings: Onion powder, garlic powder, salt and black pepper. Keep it simple!
  • Ketchup: The base of the sauce is sweet and sassy ketchup.
  • Brown sugar: To make it sweet and give it that classic brown sugary flavor.
  • Mustard: Yellow, preferably to give it some more sass.
  • Hamburger buns: The vehicle to house lots of sloppy goodness.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a medium skillet, heat the oil to medium heat.
  2. Add the ground chicken and cook 6-8 minutes or until browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
  3. Stir in the salt, onion and garlic powders and black pepper.
  4. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard and 3 tablespoons of water.
  5. Bring to a high simmer, then reduce the heat to a low simmer and let cook 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce has thickened and coats the chicken.
  6. Taste and adjust the seasoning, if necessary.
  7. Scoop the sloppy joe meat onto the bottom buns and top with pickles and the top bun.
  8. Serve immediately.

Recipe Substitutions and Alterations

  • For the oil: Use any cooking oil, particularly olive oil or a neutral oil like avocado.
  • For the meat: Use any ground meat, such as chicken, turkey, beef or pork (or a mix).
  • For the seasonings: Alter the amount of the seasonings to your taste and preferences.
  • For the ketchup: Use your favorite brand and choose low sodium if needed.
  • For the brown sugar: Use light or dark brown sugar.
  • For the yellow mustard: For a milder taste, use Dijon mustard.
  • For the buns: Use any bun you enjoy, or stuff the sloppy joe mixture into lettuce cups for a low carb meal.

Storage Tips
