Step-by-Step Cooking Instructions
- Boil water. First, get a big pot of water boiling. As you know, getting a pot of water to boil takes a bit, so get it rolling before you prep the taters. I recommend adding salt to the boiling water because it'll help flavor the potatoes, but if you're watching your sodium levels, you can easily skip this step.
- Peel the potatoes. Next, peel the sweet potatoes. I honestly don't do this step very often when making potatoes (unless I'm using russets) because the skin is full of nutrients and also provides texture to dishes. Plus, you save the hassle of peeling them. But, for these ultra creamy dreamy mashed potatoes, the skin should go. So go ahead and give the potatoes a rise, then peel away. (P.S. save the peels! You can make my easy sweet potato skin chips - yum!).
- Cube the potatoes. The next step is to cube the potatoes in 1- or 2-inch pieces. The smaller you chop them, the faster they'll cook! Boiling potatoes takes several minutes, but because it depends on the size of the cubes, be sure to check on them every few minutes by poking them with a knife or fork to test for doneness. When they're fall apart tender, go ahead and cut the heat and drain them.
- Add flavorings. Next, put the drained potatoes back in the pot. This is where we add all of the ingredients that will elevate the flavor of the sweet potatoes. This includes milk, butter, pure maple syrup, cinnamon and salt. If you want to add a few drops of pure vanilla extract, it certainly will only add more goodness to the mashed sweet potatoes!
- Whip 'em! Last, but not least, go ahead and use a hand mixer to whip these babies into mashed potato perfection. Many people will use a potato ricer to get an even smoother mash (you'd want to do this before adding the other ingredients), so that is definitely an option. I just like to keep things simple and rustic - and they're totally delicious this way.

- 3 pounds sweet potatoes (about 5-6 medium), peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
- ¼ cup butter, cut into pats
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup pure maple syrup
